This is an African-students led initiative to bring a Clinton Global University Initiative meeting in Africa in 2015. While attending a special luncheon with President Clinton at UC San Diego, we felt so inspired and promised to work towards hosting a CGIU meeting in Africa. We are committed to making this happen. As citizens of Africa and members of CGIU family we want to take the lead to inspire, motivate and help African students to make commitments to make differences in their communities.

About the Initiative

This is an African- students led initiative to bring a Clinton Global University Initiative meeting in Africa in 2015. While attending a special luncheon with President Clinton at UC San Diego, we felt so inspired and promised to work towards hosting a CGIU meeting in Africa. We are committed to making this happen. As citizens of Africa and members of CGIU family we want to take the lead to inspire, motivate and help African students make commitments to make differences in their communities. We want African students to participate in uplifting the livelihoods of the people in their communities. Therefore all commitments made by participants have to be community focused, or otherwise implemented and bring a measurable change in the community. We are building this effort based upon successful model of the Clinton Global University Initiative that brings together students from all the 50 States and around the world to take action on global challenges. Each year, we will encourage University and High School students to make Commitments to Action to make a difference in CGIU five Focus Areas: Education, Environment & Climate Change, Peace & Human Rights, Poverty Alleviation, and Health. Throughout the year, students are encouraged to develop Commitments to Action.  Commitments to Action are new, specific, and measurable initiatives that address social or environmental challenges on campuses, and in communities.  Varying in scope and duration, many commitments are the result of new and diverse partnerships between students, universities, nonprofits, and national youth organizations, with members combining efforts to expand the impact of new ideas. We are targeting to have 1500 commitments made by 2015.

“We have come a long way from ignorance to deep insight, from fear to courage and from the streets to Parliament. We moved from self to others, from ‘my issue' to 'our issues', from home to communities, from national level to global. Now we embrace the concepts of our common home and future.” - Prof. Wangari Mathai
